Undergraduate Scholarships
Undergraduate Scholarships
Through the enduring support of our alumni, private benefactors, and friends, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering proudly offers a few endowed scholarships exclusively to our current undergraduate students. To remain in contention for these awards, students are required to apply by June 1 of each year. While financial need is a criterion for certain scholarships, the majority are granted on the basis of both academic achievement and need, or purely on scholarly excellence. Typically, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is necessary to demonstrate merit.
Here are the available awards for CEE students:
Departmentally Administered Awards (deadline – June 1)
Lori Ann Lloyd Fellowship
The Lori Ann Lloyd Fellowship Fund was established in 2019 through a generous donation by her family to honor her memory and good name. This fellowship is for Incoming SUGS students, interested in a Master’s degree in CEE, who have financial need, GPA 3.0+, and membership in SWE or WISE preferred. The scholarship amount is $2,000.
Frank J. Lemper Scholarship
Frank Lemper received his engineering degree in 1913. The award was established by his daughter, Valerie L. Bullen, in 1993 through a generous endowment established in her father’s name. The average scholarship amount is $2,300 for junior or senior undergraduate students in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Roy D. Chapin Scholarship
Roy Chapin attended the University of Michigan in 1898, is the Founder of the Hudson Motor Company, and is in the Automotive Hall of Fame. This scholarship is for sophomores, juniors, or seniors taking Highway Engineering or Highway Transport Engineering courses. The scholarship amount is $3,000.
Edward V. Schulhauser Scholarship
Edward V. Schulhauser graduated with a B.S.E. in Civil Engineering from this department in 1930. His daughter established an endowment fund in his name in 1992, with the earnings from the endowment to be used for a scholarship for undergraduates in Civil Engineering. The award goes to Civil engineering upperclassmen (excluding environmental) with a 3.0 GPA or better; participation in College and departmental activities is required. The scholarship amount is $3,000.
College Of Engineering Scholarships
All of the scholarships in the College of Engineering endowments are part of the CoE need- and merit-based scholarship program and share a common application. The online application opens in early May of each year. The application period for 2024-2025 will open on May 1, 2024, and close on June 2, 2024 for the Fall/Winter terms of the following academic year.
Office of Financial Aid, Undergraduate Scholarships
At the university level, scholarships are awarded based on several criteria including academic achievement, personal talents, interests, leadership qualities, financial need, or a combination of these. Funding often reflects the university’s commitment to achieving a diverse student body. While a separate application is required for some scholarships, most require only your university admission application.
College of Engineering: Emergency Funding
The College recognizes that some Engineering students find themselves facing emergency expenses in order to be able to continue with their studies. The College of Engineering Student Emergency Fund is intended to help meet the financial needs of any Michigan Engineering student who encounters an emergency situation or one-time, unusual, or unforeseen expenses during their degree program.
SMART (The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program) Scholarships
The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students pursuing a STEM degree. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the Department of Defense after graduation. Applications are open annually from August 1-December 1.
First-Generation or Middle Income Undergraduate Experiential Learning Funding
The College of Engineering is excited to provide support to first-generation or middle-income undergraduate students, with financial need, in their pursuit of experiential learning opportunities.

William & Rita Dyer Memorial Fund Loan Program
In early August, we will provide details regarding the William & Rita Dyer Memorial Fund Loan Program for 2024-25. This is a great opportunity for CEE students to receive a significant portion of their tuition as a subsidized loan. Students may borrow up to $10,000 for in-state students and $15,000 for out-of-state students and receive up to 75% forgiveness of that amount – 50% for passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and another 50% of the remaining balance for completing a master’s degree. This is truly a unique benefit available exclusively to students in our department. To be eligible, you must be a full-time undergraduate student, in good standing, in a degree program offered by CEE, with junior standing or above. Applications should be returned to [email protected] by Thursday, August 15. The University Office of Financial Aid makes the final decision and award entry based on a number of applications, fund balance, and financial need. Please check your email again in early August for this announcement.
