Victor C. Li Appointed Distinguished University Professor

Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Victor C. Li was appointed the James R. Rice Distinguished University Professor of Engineering, effective September 1.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Victor C. Li was appointed the James R. Rice Distinguished University Professor of Engineering, effective September 1. The Board of Regents approved this appointment on Thursday, June 21.

A Distinguished University Professorship is one of the University of Michigan’s top honors. Established by the Regents in 1947, it recognizes senior faculty with exceptional scholarly or creative achievements, national and international reputations for academic excellence and superior records of teaching, mentoring and service.

Newly appointed Distinguished University Professors deliver an inaugural lecture during the first year of appointment highlighting their work at the university.

Li is recognized for his extraordinary achievements in the advancement of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) as a sustainable and resilient construction material and for serving as an inspirational role model for students and colleagues. His research links industrial ecology and structural health monitoring with bio-inspired materials design to enhance harmony between the built and the natural environment.

Professor James R. Rice was Li’s PhD advisor at Brown University and currently serves on the faculty of Harvard University.

Li is also the E. Benjamin Wylie Collegiate Professor of Civil Engineering, professor of civil and environmental engineering, of materials science and engineering, and of macromolecular science and engineering, College of Engineering.
