AEESP awards Nancy Love 2021 Frederick George Pohland Medal
The award recognizes achievements in environmental research and education.
Borchardt and Glysson Collegiate Professor Nancy G. Love has been awarded the 2021 Frederick George Pohland Medal from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
The award “honors an individual who has made sustained and outstanding efforts to bridge environmental engineering research, education, and practice,” according to the AEESP website. Members of the AEESP or the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) are eligible to be nominated for the Pohland Medal.
Love is recognized for her work at the intersection of water, public health and infrastructure. Using both physical and computational models, Love’s research group evaluates the fate of chemicals and pathogens in water and seeks to remove harmful contaminants and recover resources from water, both domestically and abroad.
Some of Love’s recent work includes collaborating on Flint point-of-use water training and the “Pee on the Peonies” project at the Nichols Arboretum. She has taught classes on urban sanitation systems and designing decentralized water systems at U-M and in partnership with Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.
Love is past president of the AEESP, and she was selected as the AEESP Distinguished Lecturer and elected AEESP Fellow in 2015, named the AAEES Kappe Lecturer of 2019-2020 and received the AAEES Science Award in 2020.
Love will be presented with a medal and a $1,000 cash award during the AEESP Annual Awards Ceremony at the AEESP Research and Education Conference, this year taking place virtually on July 14, 2021.
