CEE’s Professor Lutgarde Raskin Honored with KU Leuven Honorary Doctorate During 600th Anniversary Celebration

Professor Lutgarde Raskin, a distinguished member of U-M CEE’s faculty, returned to her alma mater, KU Leuven, to receive an honorary doctorate as part of the university’s historic 600th anniversary celebration. This prestigious recognition honors Raskin’s groundbreaking contributions to environmental biotechnology and her unwavering commitment to advancing microbial water treatment.
Throughout her career, Professor Raskin has focused on developing sustainable drinking water and wastewater treatment solutions. Her pioneering work in microbial ecology within engineered systems has played a critical role in improving water security across the globe.

Reflecting on the occasion amidst the historic setting of KU Leuven’s campus, Raskin shared: “The journey from a KU Leuven engineering student to doctor honoris causa has been filled with unexpected turns and invaluable lessons. To return to KU Leuven and be honored in this way is a testament to what is possible when we pursue fundamental research and engineering solutions in service of society.”
