Professor SangHyun Lee Inducted into National Academy of Construction

Celebrating a Career of Innovation and Influence in the Construction Industry

CEE’s SangHyun Lee, Professor and John L. Tishman CM Faculty Scholar, was inducted into the National Academy of Construction (NAC) on October 10, 2024, during a ceremony in San Antonio, Texas. The NAC recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the construction industry.

Professor Lee earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Korea’s Dong-A University and later completed his MSc and PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At Michigan, he leads the Dynamic Project Management (DPM) group, which conducts research focused on understanding and managing construction dynamics and the human-infrastructure interface through sensing, data analytics, and computer simulation. DPM’s research has explored various technologies in construction and infrastructure, with an emphasis on how these innovations can support humans to foster safe, smart, connected communities and promote social equality.

Professor Lee also directs the U-M Construction Industry Alliance Program (UMCIAP), which connects industry partners with graduate students in the Tishman Construction Management Program, offering them practical experience through research projects, internships, and professional networking. Additionally, he is an affiliated faculty member of several U-M institutes, including Michigan Robotics, the Energy Institute, the Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Michigan Institute of Computational Discovery and Engineering.

Throughout his career, Professor Lee has been widely recognized for his research and contributions as an educator. He received the University of Michigan’s Henry Russel Award in 2015, along with several prestigious honors from industry organizations, including the Distinguished Professor Award from the Construction Industry Institute, the FIATECH Outstanding Early Career Research Award, and the ASCE’s Halpin Award and Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize.

The NAC inducted Professor Lee in recognition of his impactful work, which spans automation and social psychology, contributing significantly to advancements in productivity, safety, ergonomics, and job site culture. Congratulations to Professor Lee on this well-deserved honor.
