Assistant Professor Neda Masoud has been selected to receive a 2021 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award. This prestigious award is given “in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization,” according to the NSF website.
The award recognizes teacher-scholars who are committed to research, education and the integration of research and education. Selected projects propose creative and effective research and education plans that will build a “firm foundation” for the junior faculty members’ future careers.
Masoud’s project, “CAREER: Peer-to-Peer Models and Mechanisms for the Next Generation of Transportation Systems,” seeks to identify ways in which peer-to-peer (P2P) interactions (such as ridesharing) can enhance mobility and sustainability in next generation transportation systems. Masoud’s project will explore knowledge gaps currently hindering the adoption of P2P systems and find solutions to address these gaps.
Masoud’s project addresses the potential of smart personal devices and the connected and automated vehicle technologies to transform the way people and goods move by integrating the sharing economy into the core of the next generation of transportation systems. This research aims to develop strategies to leverage “collaborative consumption” in transportation systems to ensure that resources are not under-utilized.
