EXPERTS:

Nancy Love has been selected as the 2019 Kappe Lecturer by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES). This is an extremely competitive award that is granted annually by the AAEES to a leader in the environmental engineering field whose excellence in research and professional service will inspire students.

The Kappe Lecture Series was created by the AAEES in 1989 to share the knowledge of today’s practitioners with tomorrow’s environmental engineers and scientists. It is an annually recurring series of lectures presented on college campuses during the Fall academic term. This focus enables it to complement the lecture series sponsored by the Association of Environmental Engineering & Science Professors, which brings renowned research engineers to universities in the Spring term. The Kappe Lecturer travels to a minimum of 10 institutions during the academic year to give engaging and forward-looking lectures to student audiences. Love will offer two lectures: “Rethinking America’s Urban Water Infrastructure: Resource Efficiency, Access, and Public Health” and “Environmental Engineering and Science Academic Scholarship in Service to Society: Our Role and Responsibility.”

Love’s research work focuses on the interface of water, infrastructure, and both public and environmental health in domestic and global settings. She focuses on assessing and advancing public and environmental health using chemical, biological and analytical approaches applied to water systems using physical experiments and computational models. Love evaluates the fate of chemicals, pathogens and contaminants of emerging concern in water with relevance to public health and the environment; uses technologies to sense and remove these constituents; and advances technologies that recover useful resources from water.

Borchardt and Glysson Collegiate Professor Nancy Love

Nancy Love  is the Borchardt and Glysson Collegiate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University Michigan, and an adjunct Professor at the Institute of Biotechnology at Addis Ababa University. She has BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD degree in Environmental System Engineering from Clemson University. Dr. Love has also held leadership positions in multiple organizations, including with the Water Environment Federation (WEF), the International Water Association (IWA), and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).

Stanley E. Kappe, P.E., DEE, a successful environmental engineer, believed he owed a debt to the profession that rewarded him so well. During his life, he gave of himself to his university and to his profession through countless hours of volunteer activity. Through the Kappe Lecture Series, he continues to share his good fortune with tomorrow’s environmental engineers and scientists.

To have Dr. Love visit your campus, visit the AAEES website and download the reservation form. The reservation deadline is March 15. Reserved visits are on a first come, first served basis.
