Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty and students recently attended one of the world’s largest gatherings of transportation professionals. The Transportation Research Board (TRB) held their 97th Annual Meeting in Washington D.C on January 7-11, 2018. A group from the Michigan Transportation Student Organization (MiTSO), along with six CEE faculty members, traveled to D.C. to learn more about the latest issues and innovations involving transportation.

The TRB Annual Meeting attracts more than 13,000 transportation professional from all around the world. The event involves over 5,000 presentations in nearly 800 sessions and workshops, addressing topics of interest to policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.

The theme for the 2018 TRB meeting was “Transportation: Moving the Economy of the Future.” Many of the presentations centered around the hot-button topics of resilience and sustainability, transportation and public health and transformational technologies.

CEE’s Next Generation Transportation Systems (NGTS) faculty and students are actively working on technical research focused on these very topics, making the annual TRB Meeting the top transportation event for NGTS.

TRB is one of seven program units of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. TRB engages engineers, scientists, and other transportation researchers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia.

The undergraduate and graduate students group was accompanied to the Annual Meeting by CEE faculty members Tierra Bills, Henry Liu, Neda Masoud, Yafeng Yin, Branko Kerkez, and Jerome Lynch.
