Research Interests

My research is motivated by the climate change crisis which has been recognized by the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7): the need for affordable and clean energy access at a global scale. In alignment with the SDGs, the U.S. has set aggressive targets of 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 (goal set in 2021). Achieving this goal requires an unprecedented decarbonization effort that will transform our present-day grid to one exclusively transporting electrons generated from renewable energy. The energy transition presents an unparalleled opportunity to redesign the grid, a complex large-scale network of systems to meet green, resilience, and equity goals.

  • Operations, planning, and control of decarbonized electric power systems
  • Distributed energy resources and smart grids
  • Electricity market design and analysis, with a focus on retail markets and pricing
  • Energy justice, with a focus on energy access and affordability
  • Methods: optimization, machine learning, control theory, energy economics
  • Engagement: system operators, utilities, communities, policy-makers, national labs and academic institutions
