Kerkez & Clack appointed to NASEM committees

Branko Kerkez and Herek Clack advance our mission through expertise in water tech and PPE innovation on national boards.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of two esteemed faculty members from U-M CEE to committees within the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). Arthur F. Thurnau Associate Professor Branko Kerkez will serve on the Water Science and Technology Board (WSTB), while Associate Professor Herek Clack has been appointed to the Standing Committee on Personal Protective Equipment (COPPE).

Professor Kerkez joins the Water Science and Technology Board (WSTB), a crucial advisory body established in 1982 to enhance water resource management through science and technology. With expertise in emerging technologies, particularly in AI and real-time data, Kerkez’s research at Michigan’s Digital Water Lab is focused on developing smart water systems that adapt to dynamic conditions. His work as Chief Technical Officer of Hyfi and his dedication to open-source innovation through Open-Storm.org highlight his commitment to pioneering advancements in urban water management. Among his many recognitions are the Gilbreth Lecture by the National Academy of Engineering and the Verizon Climate Resilience Prize, underscoring his impact on water technology innovation.

Professor Clack, known for his groundbreaking work on airborne aerosol health impacts, will contribute his expertise to COPPE, a committee sponsored by the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). COPPE drives forward scientific and technical standards for personal protective equipment, ensuring workplace safety. Clack’s work at the University of Michigan, as well as his innovations at his startup, Taza Aya, center on advancing respiratory protection technology. His development of a wearable air curtain that removes and neutralizes airborne pathogens has the potential to set a new standard in respiratory safety. As a COPPE committee member, Clack will collaborate with NPPTL representatives and industry experts to explore advancements in respiratory protection, sensor systems, and related technologies.

These prestigious appointments highlight U-M CEE’s leadership in environmental safety and water resource innovation. Congratulations to Professors Kerkez and Clack on their new roles with the National Academies.
