U-M CEE is excited to announce that the Donald Malloure Department Chair and Professor Yafeng Yin has been formally recognized as the Donald Cleveland Collegiate Professor of Engineering. This recognition took place at a ceremony on April 2nd, 2024. This appointment represents the significance of his contributions to the field of transportation engineering.
The ceremony began with Interim Dean of Engineering, Steven Ceccio, who highlighted the value of collegiate professorships within the U-M community. He paid homage to the namesake of this professorship, mentioning, “As our honoree has done, Professor Donald Cleveland did landmark work in the field of traffic research and engineering.”
Professor Henry Liu introduced Yafeng Yin with a personal reflection that conveyed both respect and a collegial bond. Liu remarked, “Personally, I feel privileged to have the chance to work with him in various roles. I have followed his work in the last 20 years, and I hope to continue to follow his work in the years to come. I’m very delighted to be here to see him receive this honor.”
During the event, Professor Yin’s former students had the opportunity to express their gratitude. Assistant Professor Daniel Vignon from NYU shared, “Thank you very much Dr. Yin for your time, your patience, your direction, and especially for the opportunity to work with you. And congratulations on this great achievement. I look forward to many more to come.”
Echoing these sentiments, Associate Professor Ziqi Song from the University of Buffalo recognized Yin’s broader influence, saying, “You have not only shaped us into competent scholars but also into humble educators.”
Professor Yin shared insights from his years of research on “Modeling Mobility: The Quest for Behavioral Realism in Travel Forecasting.” His presentation demonstrated his ongoing commitment to enhancing travel demand models to better support the planning of transportation infrastructure and services.
Upon the conclusion of the ceremony Professor Yin was presented with the traditional symbols of this distinction—a medal and a chair.
The CEE community is delighted for Professor Yin, and we look forward to his continued impact within the department, as well as the broader field of engineering.
