U-M CEE Prof. Henry Liu Formally Recognized as the Bruce D. Greenshields Collegiate Professor of Engineering

Much like Greenshields, Professor Liu has adorned his career with significant contributions to transportation studies and traffic engineering.

Congratulations to U-M Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Prof. Henry Liu for being recognized as the Bruce D. Greenshields Collegiate Professor of Engineering on Monday, February 5th, 2024.

At the recognition ceremony, Mingyan Liu, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, opened the ceremony and acknowledged the legacy of Dr. Bruce D. Greenshields. Greenshields, a renowned U-M faculty member, was a distinguished scholar and prolific author. His work in traffic engineering greatly contributed to the literature on traffic behavior and highway safety, establishing him as a prominent figure in the field.

Much like Greenshields, Professor Liu has adorned his career with significant contributions to transportation studies and traffic engineering. Continuing his prolific career, Professor Liu serves as a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Research Professor at the U-M Transportation Research Institute and leads the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation. He is also the Director of Mcity— contributing greatly to the shaping of transportation studies at U-M.

CEE Emeritus Professor Donald Cleveland, Mcity Managing Director Greg McGuire, CEE Associate Professor Neda Masoud, and Purdue University Civil Engineering Professor Yiheng Feng delivered commendable remarks during the ceremony, praising Liu’s exemplary work and mentorship.

Professor Liu continued the event by delivering a lecture on safety assessments for highly automated vehicles—a key focus of his research—and the work he has done at the Michigan Traffic Lab within CEE. In his lecture, Liu detailed the past, present, and future of Mcity and how his research is spearheading the national conversation on autonomous vehicles.

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Mingyan Liu closed the ceremony with her final remarks, congratulating Liu on his significant accomplishments and presenting him with the professorship medal and chair. This recognition as the Bruce D. Greenshields Collegiate Professor of Engineering reflects Liu’s dedication to teaching, research, and publication, further solidifying his legacy at the University of Michigan.

U-M CEE extends its heartfelt appreciation for Liu’s dedicated service, contributing to the growth and excellence of Michigan Engineering over the years.
