This distinguished award honors Professor Hanson’s outstanding contributions to earthquake safety including his stellar research, educational efforts, and essential international cooperation. Across his 40-year academic career, Hanson’s pioneering works in the repair of reinforced concrete buildings and passive control of earthquake responses have left lasting impacts in the field. With over 120 publications and numerous accolades to his name, Hanson’s influence is felt not just in academia, but also in practical applications of earthquake hazard reduction policies.

Professor Hanson’s dedication to the cause is also evident through his off-campus assignments where he’s served in key roles with UNESCO, NSF, and FEMA. His remarkable work to develop a plan for the repair and upgrade of hospital buildings following the Northridge Earthquake was acknowledged with FEMA’s “Meritorious Service Award.”

Beyond his research endeavors, Professor Hanson stands out as an influential mentor, having guided 27 PhD graduate committees between 1967 and 2002. His decades-long association with EERI and services as its president in 1989-1990 add to his inspiring career.
