Mr. Walker leaves lasting legacy through his involvement with CEE
It is with profound sadness that U-M CEE recognizes the passing of H. Carl Walker Jr.
Mr. Walker, who died on February 4, 2023, in Saline, Michigan, graduated with his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from U-M. He was an excellent structural engineer who became an expert in the fields of prestressed concrete and the design of parking structures and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Carl and his wife, Dorothy, have been longtime donors to U-M CEE through the Carl & Dorothy Walker Fund, which has provided generous support for 62 students to date.
Prof. Jason McCormick, CEE Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Department Chair of Undergraduate Programs, commented on Mr. Walker’s impact on the department and its students. “Carl and Dorothy had great foresight in seeing the need to fund Master’s students seeking to enter the structural engineering industry,” Prof. McCormick said. “The Carl & Dorothy Walker Fund has provided a significant number of students with an opportunity to further their expertise in structural engineering through a Master’s Degree since 2003.”
Mr. Walker’s legacy in civil and structural engineering will continue to live on through the students supported by the Carl & Dorothy Walker Fund. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 24, at the First United Methodist Church, 212 South Park Street, Kalamazoo, with a reception following. All friends are welcome.
