Jeff Scruggs selected for Berker and Gokyigit Faculty Scholar Award

This award recognizes outstanding work by a member of the CEE Department in advancing the state of the art in smart and sustainable infrastructure systems.

Jeff Scruggs has been selected for a named Berker and Gokyigit Faculty Scholar Award, effective January 1, 2019. Made possible by a generous gift from Feyyaz Berker and A. Nihat Gokyigit, this award recognizes outstanding work by a member of the CEE Department in advancing the state of the art in smart and sustainable infrastructure systems.

Jeff was selected for his outstanding research in applied control theory including his high-impact work in offshore wave energy systems. Over the last ten years, he has conducted extensive research on robust control of ocean wave energy converters, to maximize their energy production while simultaneously protecting them from damage. During this time he has collaborated with a number of device developers and other industry participants, and his control algorithms have been demonstrated on several distinct conversion devices and technologies.

Jeff Scruggs is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, which he joined in 2011. He received his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and his PhD in Applied Mechanics from the Caltech in 2004. Scruggs’ current research is in the areas of mechanics, vibration, energy and control.
