Smart Cities

Lines of light over city at night

Beyond self-driving cars, the connected cities of the future will have smart buildings, smart water systems and smart energy grids. As such, engineering education has to expand to include knowledge of infrastructure, the environment, technology, sensors and data science. The CEE Focus in Smart Cities gives you just that, guiding you through a tailored curriculum and immersive experiences outside the classroom.

This undergraduate Focus is built upon a foundation and major in Civil or Environmental Engineering (CEE). Civil and Environmental Engineers shape the world around us, building our habitats and sustaining our natural resources. To complete your Focus, you will obtain a minor in Computer Science from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, taking 15 credits from a tailored set of courses geared at Smart Cities. By planning ahead and selecting these courses as electives, you can complete your Focus as part of your four-year degree.

The CEE program at U-M is one of the top-ranked in the world, and a Focus on Smart Cities promises immense, rewarding and lucrative career opportunities. Throughout your time as part of our Smart Cities group, you will have the opportunity to attend exclusive tours of smart city testbeds and participate in other activities that will enrich your understanding of the connected cities of the future.

Sign up to join an unprecedented cohort of like-minded students, destined to build the smart cities of the future.
