Geotechnical Engineering Graduate Programs


Master of Science students in geotechnical engineering work toward the degree Master of Science in Engineering (Civil Engineering). This degree program requires 30 hours of course work, including at least two cognate courses taken in departments other than Civil and Environmental Engineering. At least one course in Mathematics is required beyond that needed to satisfy the Bachelor's degree requirements in this department.

The degree Doctor of Philosophy (Civil Engineering) usually includes 50 to 60 hours of course work beyond the Bachelor's degree level. The total graduate program must include at least two cognate courses. Foreign languages are not required, but an English proficiency requirement must be met either by examination or by course work. The focus of doctoral studies is the student's dissertation research, which must make a significant contribution to professional knowledge in the field. Major steps toward the Ph.D. degree include:

  • Qualifying exam, usually taken after completion of one term of course work beyond the Master's level
  • English proficiency examination or course work
  • Appointment of the candidacy and dissertation committee
  • Advancement to candidacy through the preliminary examination
  • Completion of the dissertation
