Construction Engineering Management Facilities

The Construction Engineering Laboratory located on the first floor of G. G. Brown provides students with resources to study and to do their research. The laboratory is equipped with several computers, laser printers, scanners, a HP plotter, and other audio-visual equipment including camcorders, digital cameras, VCRs, and DVD players. All computers are networked and have Ethernet connections making them accessible anywhere on campus. All computers are equipped with the latest software for simulation, scheduling, and visualization of construction projects and processes. The laboratory is also a resource for various construction documents. These include current periodical literature (e.g. ENR), reference books (e.g. Means Building Construction Cost Data), plans and specifications for several projects, and construction videos.

The Construction Information Technology Laboratory at the University of Michigan is a facility set up for extraction, retrieval, and indexing of visual, textual, and structured information from construction site data. Currently, the laboratory is being equipped with desktop computers, printers, scanners, and some audio-visual equipment including camcorders, and digital cameras. All computers are being networked with LAN connections making them accessible from other parts of the campus. The research projects housed in the laboratory are aimed to serve a number of construction engineering and management tasks like inspection, productivity measurements, progress monitoring, and evidence retrieval. The ultimate purpose is to collect data real-time and wireless from visual and other sensors placed at local on-going projects and then to convert the data to information using pattern recognition tools for object detection, segmentation, abnormal pattern extraction and other purposes that serve the objectives of the each research project housed inside.
