Naga Veena Tarlana (MEng ‘16)  and Vishal Shreyans Shah (MSE ‘16) will present “Investigating the Applications of NetPoint for Level 3 Schedules” at the annual PMA Technologies conference taking place on March 2 and 3 in Nashville, TN. The two recent graduates from the Tishman Construction Management Program will be discussing a research project they undertook as part of CEE 530: Construction Professional Practice in Winter 2016. Vaibhav Jain (MSE ‘16) was also involved with the project.

The innovative class, taught by Professor Carol Menassa and supported by professors SangHyun Lee and Vineet Kamat as faculty mentors to the student teams, focuses on embedded experiential learning, in which students get out of the classroom and into worksites for hands-on experiences. Tarlana, Shah, and Jain spent the semester working with PMA Technologies in Ann Arbor investigating the uses of advanced scheduling software in construction projects.

The founder of PMA Technologies, Gui Ponce de Leon is a CEE graduate (MS ‘69 and PhD ‘72), and the company is a founding member of our U-M Construction Industry Alliance Program (UMCIAP). UMCIAP is  directed by SangHyun Lee and co-directed by Menassa and Kamat. UMCIAP members have been very influential in supporting the experiential learning by providing real construction industry problems to be researched by the students, and allowing the student teams to be embedded in their companies during the semester long project.

The research topic for this talk was part of a semester-long project in which the student team investigated construction scheduling technologies and worked with as volunteer consultants with mentors and clients  from PMA  to implement a Level 3 project schedule in Netpoint. Such project schedules  have traditionally been developed using Primavera due to their inherent complexity. Using Netpoint would allow decision makers to easily visualize and understand the different schedule intricacies. The team  prepared and presented written and oral reports on a weekly basis. A professional report and video was also compiled at the end of the class for presentation to clients.
